Early Life and College Career

Jason Collins grew up in the Los Angeles area alongside his twin brother, Jarron Collins, who also became an NBA player. Both attended Harvard-Westlake School, where they helped lead the basketball team to two state championships.

Collins went on to play college basketball at Stanford University (1997–2001). As a Cardinal, he became known for his strong defensive presence and basketball IQ. During his senior year, he earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors and helped Stanford achieve top national rankings.

NBA Career

Jason Collins was selected 18th overall in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets but was traded on draft night to the New Jersey Nets. He played 13 seasons in the NBA for several teams, including:

• Memphis Grizzlies (2008)

• Minnesota Timberwolves (2008–2009)

On April 29, 2013, Collins became the first active male athlete in a major American professional team sport to publicly come out as gay. His announcement, made in a Sports Illustrated essay, was widely praised as a landmark moment for LGBTQ+ representation in sports.

In 2014, Collins signed with the Brooklyn Nets, becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in an NBA game.

Retirement and Later Work

Collins announced his retirement from basketball in November 2014. Since then, he has been active as:
